Our Mission: To Preserve, Protect, and Restore Pennsylvania's Cold Water Streams and their habitats.
PA Trout Unlimited offers Trout in the Classroom Grants
PA Trout will offer Chapters the opportunity to participate in the Trout in the Classroom program. This opportunity is in partnership with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission's Sportfishing and Aquatic Resource Education Grant program. Chapter may choose to raise the money themselves and notify PA Trout that they will be doing this instead of applying for the grant. Contact Deb Nardone for details.
Trout in the Classroom (TIC) is an environmental education program in which students in grades k-12 . . .
- raise trout from eggs to fry.
- monitor tank water quality.
- engage in stream habitat study.
- learn to appreciate water resources.
- begin to foster a conservation ethic.
- grow to understand ecosystems.
Most programs end the year by releasing their trout in a state-approved stream near the school or within a nearby watershed.
During the year each teacher tailors the program to fit his or her curricular needs. Therefore, each program is unique. TIC has interdisciplinary applications in science, social studies, mathematics, language arts, fine arts, and physical education.
Each chapter is expected to work hand-in-hand with the teacher and the students to implement the program. The grant will provide the Chapter / School with all of the gear and training necessary to start the program. Chapters will be expected to cover half the cost of the setup, approximately $500. Funded Chapters and their partnering teacher will also be expected to attend a one-day training about the program at Bald Eagle State Park near State College.
Before applying, the Chapter must ensure they have an interested school teacher, permission from the school's principal, and have identified a state approved stream to release the fry (not a Class A or Wilderness Trout stream). A brief summary report will be required upon completion.
Grant information will be mailed to each Chapter President in early August. Grant applications are due September 14 th . For more information about the TIC program, please visit www.troutintheclassroom.org .
